The Process

  1. Furnace is turned off at breaker, gas is switched to PILOT setting.
  2. Plastic bag is placed over the filter to divide the system into supply and return sections.
  3. A mat is placed over the coils to prevent debris buildup.
  4. Large HEPA vacuum unit is attached to the furnace at plenum and turned on.
  5. All vent covers are removed and cardboard is placed over the registers.
  6. Starting at farthest register away, each supply line is cleaned first with a whip, then blown out using highly compressed air through a sweep.
  7. The trunk lines are whipped and then swept.
  8. Each register grill is cleaned with a detergent solution and a nylon brush and then reinstalled.
  9. The returns are whipped and swept in the same way, and the covers are scrubbed and replaced.
  10. The coils are cleaned with an EPA registered disinfectant.
  11. If accessible, the blower is vacuumed. (This can only be done if the blower can be reached without removing the motor or dismantling the system.)
  12. Access ports in the ducting are plugged and patched, sealed with HVAC tape.
  13. The old filter is removed in the plastic bag and a new filter is installed. This filter is to be provided by the homeowner.
  14. The furnace breaker is switched back on and gas units are set to ON.
  15. Expect the job to last 3-4 hours for an average sized house.
